D.O. Foster Dogs is an up and coming idea that puts words to my desire to help dogs within the shelter system, while spreading the word of the increasing need for foster care and its impact on the community.
The name itself is a play off of my medical student standing; while also providing a direct visualization of the goals that I have envisioned for the future organization. D.O. stands for doctor of osteopathic medicine; the feild of medicine that I am studying towards. Osteopathic medicine training and certification is equivalent to that of an Allopathic doctor, or M.D.. The difference lies within the philosophy behind practicing medicine. Simply put, most D.O. doctors tend to be very holistic with their practice. They like to focus on the entire individual, rather than just the ailment they came in for. I like to take this idea of holisticism to yet another level.
As individuals, we are a product of our environments. The people, circumstances, and surrounding happenstance that becomes involved in our lives, influences the choices we make on a daily basis. In order to be truly holistic, we not only need to focus on the individual, but the environment around the individual. Therefore, any action that positively reflects upon the community, also reflects positively upon the psychological heath of people within that community.
While I am studying to help care for the community's physical health, I am also choosing to focus on helping dogs within the community. Dogs provide a source of joy and understanding to anyone who owns one, and yet there are those that find themselves on death row. They do not get a choice in life, and yet come out of those situations with uncondition love for everyone around them. Even a random pedestrian passing by a dog often receives a little extra joy to their day. Therefore,
-DO foster and adopt shelter pets.
-DO spay and neuter your pets
-DO help by volunteering within your community
It is my hope that D.O. Foster Dogs will grow into a full fledged organization one day; but for now, it involves only my personal efforts to make a difference. With this idea, I am currently helping the Wythe County Humane Society by fostering a dog. Therefore, during the development of my ideas, I will be posting about my current foster dog and the activities that they goes through. It is my hope that by seeing the dog's personality, someone may be more inclined to adopt.
